Kumasi Central Prisons inmates achieve academic excellence

Inmates of the Kumasi Central Prisons are making great strides in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), recording 100 per cent pass, despite being incarcerated and studying under restricted conditions.

The educational programme was instituted at the facility in 2009 to help the inmates acquire academic qualification to enhance their integration into society when they are released.

Except for the lack of cash which is preventing the institution from registering the inmates, the programme has been smooth.

Records

In 2011, for instance, out of the 15 candidates who sat for the BECE, two recorded aggregate 20-22, six recorded 23-30 and seven scored 31-36, and the four candidates who sat for the WASSCE in 2011, scored between aggregate 18 and 20.

During the same year, out of the 13 candidates who sat for the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) examinations, three recorded distinction, five had credits and five others had pass.

The statistics also showed that in 2012, out of the 11 candidates who wrote the BECE, one had aggregate nine, eight had aggregates 18-24 while two others had aggregate 26.

The Ashanti Regional Commander of Prisons, Deputy Director of Prisons, Mr William Ofori Annoff, who disclosed these to the Daily Graphic after the presentation of a cheque for Gh¢2,000 to the Prison Service by management of Unibank Ghana Ltd, said the success stories of the inmates was as a result of various contributions made by officers in charge of the educational unit of the service.

The money is to be used to paint the Central Prison and make it more attractive.

He said the service would continue to ensure that the inmates were properly trained and reformed to fit into society.

He commended Unibank for responding swiftly to a request for assistance and pledged that the money would be used for the intended purpose.

The Harper Road branch Manager of Unibank, Mr Justice K. Naaba, who presented the cheque, said the donation was part of the company’s social corporate responsibility.
