Kombian, who is currently in condemned cells at the prison, allegedly attempted to escape with two other inmates whose identities are yet to be disclosed.

The prison authorities are currently investigating how the three were able to move out of the condemned cells to the main prison yard late Sunday night when they were spotted by officials on routine night rounds.

The Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, Deputy Superintendent of Prisons (DSP) Mr Courage Atsem, who confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic, said the Nsawam Prison had been closed to allow for investigations to establish the circumstances leading to the attempted jail break.

He declined to provide further details.

Kombian was sentenced to death by the High Court in Accra in August 2015 for robbery and murder.

He is also serving a 30-year jail term for conspiracy.

Background

Kombian, alias Garkum, allegedly conspired with Kofi Naaman, known as Accra Boy, to rob Djato Mathias and then attempted to kill him.

Kombian was arrested, tried and sentenced to seven years in prison by the Tamale Circuit Court, but he escaped while serving his term.

He was re-arrested at Nakpanduri in the Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo District in the Northern Region, where he had sought refuge.

In the course of re-arresting him on October 17, 2010, Kombian and his accomplices opened fire on the policemen detailed to effect his arrest.

Two of the policemen were killed, while a third sustained serious gunshot wounds.

Kombian and his accomplices fled the scene, but he was re-arrested on November 19, 2010 when he crossed the border to Ghana in the Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo District to visit his girlfriend.

He was subsequently sentenced to death by hanging on two counts of murder on August 19, 2015, after a seven-member jury had returned a verdict of guilty.
