The alumni of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in Ghana have given a facelift to the Osu Boys’ Remand Home and the Centre for Abused Children in the Greater Accra Region.

As part of their social responsibility, the alumni renovated the ceilings of rooms, installed new water-closet toilets and ceiling fans and also repaired all damaged electrical wires at the homes.

They also supplied bunk beds, mattresses and white boards to the facilities and painted the walls and chairs in the classrooms.

The KOICA alumni also cleaned the centres and presented assorted items to the children.

In addition, they organised various fun games to entertain the children and held counselling sessions aimed at remoulding their behaviour.

Selflessness

The Korean Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Lyeo Woon-Ki, urged the management of the institutions to utilise the items judiciously for the well-being of the children.

He said the gesture by the KOICA alumni was the result of the selflessness that Korea education had inculcated in them, saying they learnt from the Korean spirit and tradition to give back their talents to society

He said Korea was a unique country that had transformed itself from a donor-dependent to a donor country over several decades.

He commended the alumni for carrying out with a similar project at the Anani Memorial International School at Nima last year.

Members

The group is made up of 650 members who have benefited from training and scholarship programmes in Korea.

Ambassador Woon-ki said Korea had contributed to the human resource development of the country through KOICA’s fellowship programmes.

For his part, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Mr Kwesi Armo-Himbson, commended the group for the initiative which he said would improve the well-being of children in the facilities.
