A delegation from the Nkwanta Traditional Council in the Volta Region called on the President at the Flagstaff House yesterday to inform him about the funeral arrangements for the slain DCE.  The President told the delegation that he was optimistic that the perpetrators would be tracked and made to face justice.

According to the Volta Regional Minister, Madam Helen Ntoso, who led the delegation, 10 suspects arrested in connection with the murder were currently on remand.

Recalling similar murders involving the chiefs of Seikwa and Bimbilla, as well as a businessman in Kumasi recently, President Mahama said “the impunity must stop.”

He also said the death of the DCE came as a shock to the government and gave an assurance that he would be given a befitting funeral.

Volta Region’s development

President Mahama took the opportunity to brief the delegation about some of the development projects going on in the Volta Region.

He stated that a contract had been awarded for the reconditioning of the Have-Dodi Pepeso portion of the Eastern Corridor road.

The Eastern Corridor road project would be completed to open up the areas for further development, he added.

Delegation’s spokesman

The spokesman for the delegation, Nana Addo Kenewu, informed the President that the burial and final funeral rites of the deceased would be held  on January 24, 2015.

Nana Kenewu said the death of the DCE was a big blow to the people in the district because he was   hardworking and approachable and was also able to explain government policies and programmes to the people.

Funeral of Togbe Dei

In another development, a delegation of the chiefs and people of the Peki Traditional Area was also at the Flagstaff House to formally inform the President about the passing of the Paramount Chief of Peki, Togbe Kwadzo Dei XI.

Togbe Dei, 78, died in 2009, but some unfortunate developments in the traditional area delayed his burial.

The way was cleared after the Regional Security Council intervened in the matter.

President Mahama described the late paramount chief as a man who served his people and nation with distinction and assured the delegation that the government would be fully represented at the funeral.

The funeral rites have been fixed for February 20 to March 1, with burial on  February  28, 2015
