Jaman North Constituency elections postponed to Thursday

The Electoral Commission has postponed elections in the Jaman North Constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region to Thursday, December 8 following a disagreement between political parties over the voter’s register.

At a press conference in Accra the Director of Elections, Mr Samuel Tettey explained that but for some security reasons elections in the constituency could not take place.

“As a result of a disagreement between the political parties on the voter’s register, voting didn’t start at 7 as planned. After much discussion between the EC and the parties, the issue of the register was resolved at around 12 o’clock. The Commission however overruled a decision by the DISEC to have the elections postponed,” he explained.

“However, several efforts by our officers to move materials to the 92 polling stations in the constituency was unsuccessful. The security teams on the field could not guarantee a safe environment to continue. As a result, the Commission has decided to reschedule the elections in the Jaman North Constituency to Thursday and voting will start at 7am to 5pm,” Mr Tettey further clarified.

“We sincerely empathise with voters and we will like to ensure them that adequate arrangements will be put in place to ensure everyone on the register in the Jaman North Constituency who turns out can vote.”

He noted but for some places in the Afram Plains North Constituency, the election process on a whole had gone on smoothly across the country.

“Our reports have shown that the exercise has been exceptionally successful in all places except in very few instances where we have minor issues.”

He noted that elections in the Dwarf Islands of the Afram Plains North Constituency were ongoing due to the late start of the process.

“That island is one of the hard or difficult areas to reach and ballot papers and other voting materials were airlifted to the island at 9:30 am and it took at least two hours for the materials to be distributed to all the polling stations of the island hence the late start,” Mr Tettey said.

“Following a review the commission has decided to extend voting in these areas by 5 hours and would end at about 10 pm. All voters in the queue after 10 pm will get the chance to vote,” he added.
