Imbue good morals in tertiary students — Prof. Ampiah

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, has challenged faith-based institutions ‘not to join the bandwagon’ and lose focus of their core mandate of delivering higher education alongside good morals.

According to him, a lot of the faith-based tertiary institutions in the country were either copying what the mainstream universities were doing and, therefore, did not follow a particular path or failed to follow their core mandate.

Prof. Ampiah made the remarks as the Guest Speaker during the eighth congregation and 13th matriculation of the Pentecost University College (PUC) at Sowutuom in Accra.

“Faith-based institutions such as the PUC have a crucial role to play in ensuring that their core values are capable of shaping their products into agents of change in terms of peace and societal transformation,” he stated.

Commendation

Prof. Ampiah, however, commended the PUC for instituting programmes which would nurture the students to become morally upright and responsible citizens even when they left school, noting that it was a good start for other institutions to take a cue from.

“You also need to add a liberal course on how to resolve human rights and conflicts across the African continent. Hopefully, this will go a long way to make your students learn to accommodate and be tolerant of one another,” he added.

Graduation statistics

In all, 627 students graduated in various undergraduate and graduate programmes at the school.

Out of the number, 83 were graduate students, 536 undergraduates and eight others pursued various professional programmes.

Peaceful environment

Speaking on the theme, “PUC: Empowering our generation to drive change trough peace building and societal transformation,” the Rector of the PUC, Apostle Dr Daniel Okyere Walker, said there was the need for the graduands to be ambassadors of peace.

He stated that it was only in a peaceful environment that they could work freely after school.

Apostle Walker indicated that as graduates, they could not work in an atmosphere of chaos and anarchy if they always failed to seek peace in the country.

“An atmosphere without peace creates highly unequal environment of peace unable to empower the younger generation to work hard to effect societal transformation,” he added.

He also added his voice to the call on tertiary institutions to provide holistic education to help groom the youth to become better citizens “and not only focus on academics as the only way to success.”
