ICT teachers to undergo free capacity-building programme

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) teachers in basic schools in the Bosomtwe District in the Ashanti Region are to benefit from a free capacity-building programme by the Bosomtwe District Assembly by the end of this month.

The capacity building initiative, which is being funded by the Bosomtwe District Assembly, is aimed at enhancing the teaching skills of the ICT teachers so that they would be able to teach students in all basic schools in the district.

The Bosomtwe District Coordinating Director, Mr Kingsley Kofi Senkyire, who disclosed this to the Daily Graphic, explained that the assembly decided to embark on that drive because of the important role ICT played in the development of every facet of life.

ICT resource centre

He stated that after the training, all basic schools in the Kuntanase Circuit would start using an ICT resource centre that was constructed three years ago at Kuntanase but was not being used because of lack of basic computers and other accessories.

The usage of the ICT centre, he said, would be on a pilot basis and would be extended to other schools in the district after some time.

He added that a district-wide timetable would be drawn for all schools to visit the facility.

The decision to embark on the training of the teachers was taken at a meeting on a collaboration between the Bosomtwe Directorate of the Ghana Education Service and the District Assembly at Kuntanase recently.

It was during the meeting between the two parties that the use of an abandoned ICT resource centre at Kuntanase was discussed.

A former Energy Minister, Dr Joe Oteng-Adjei, on April 12, 2012 cut a sod for the construction of the GH¢330,000 modern ICT resource centre at Kuntanase, the capital of the Bosomtwe District.

The project, funded by the Communication Ministry, was completed during the first quarter of 2013 but had not been used because of various reasons.

The Manager of the ICT resource centre, Mr Kofi Sarpong Kwarteng, told the Daily Graphic that when it became fully operational, the building was supposed to have other facilities such as a post office and a library.

Unfortunately, he said, there was no furniture and shelves in the library although there were enough books.

Appeal

He appealed for support so that students in and around the area could make good use of it.

The facility which is expected to be equipped with over 300 computers and accessories, as well as internet connectivity, currently has only 20 computers, with no internet connectivity.

He stated that the Kuntanase ICT centre had been made a district resource centre for all schools in the district so that students would be able to enhance their knowledge of the teaching and learning of ICT.
