The refurbished work covered painting, replacement of furniture, re-tiling and ceiling, laying of cables and the installation of networking equipment and air conditioners.

Value of the work

The refurbished work, valued at GH¢400,000, also included the provision of 30 desktop computers, new furniture, shelves and the fixing of ceiling fans and air conditioners.

The decision of the company to undertake the rehabilitation works on the library, which incidentally houses the headquarters of the Ghana Library Authority (GLA), follows a Daily Graphic report of the sorrowful state of libraries in the country.

The Chief Executive Director of Huawei Technologies, Mr Russell Xu, was happy that the library had a fully equipped ICT laboratory, which could be used by the youth and children to acquire knowledge.

“It is important that both the library and the users take very good care of the computer laboratory and I sincerely hope that as many youth and children as possible can benefit from the library,” he added.

China’s contribution

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Mrs Sun Baohong, commended the company for supporting the library authority and said the support was only one of the company’s social responsibility work carried out in 2014, adding that earlier this year it donated $500,000 to the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Foundation.

She added that the company was one of the many Chinese enterprises that had made remarkable contributions to Ghana’s economic development, social progress and the improvement of people’s livelihood.

Mrs Baohong said the Chinese enterprises carried out extensive mutual beneficial cooperation with Ghana, employed a great number of local people and embarked on technology transfer and human resources development.

The Minister of Communications, Mr Edward Omane Boamah, commended Huawei Technologies for its contribution to  the communication sector .

He said the relationship between Ghana and China dated back to the days of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and that the two countries would continue to work for the benefit of their citizens.

Commendation

Welcoming the guests, the Executive Director of the Ghana Library Authority, Mr Ofosu Tenkorang,  said the hand over of the facility was another milestone as far as the infrastructure of the authority was concerned.

He was grateful to the Daily Graphic for its publication, which attracted Huawei to take up the renovation works, adding that the company did not renege on its promise.
