At the hand over ceremony of medals and logistics to the organisers in August 2016, the Managing Director of the bank, Mr Robert Le Hunte, launched a target of "Ghana Tokyo Gold” (GTG).

He encouraged other corporate sponsors and stakeholders to also come on board in the spirit of Public Private Partnership (PPP) to make the dream of Ghana winning at least a gold medal in athletics at the next Olympic Games in Tokyo a reality.

Optimism

Speaking at the opening of the Youth Athletics festival in Sunyani, the General Manager of the bank’s retail banking, Ms Paula Balwin, also indicated, that Ghana could win gold at Tokyo.

‘The past does not matter, neither does the present situation. What matters is the future and also our commitment, preparation and support to make it happen,” she stated.

Ms Balwin  urged the athletes to put up their best performances and be assured of the bank’s commitment and support for them to achieve excellence.

Competition

The two-day athletics festival was characterised by a number of good performances from the enthusiastic group of young athletes from all regions in Ghana. Four new national records were broken and a number of rising stars were unearthed.

In the end, the Ashanti Region team was adjudged the overall winners, with the Greater Accra and Upper East regional teams taking the second and third positions respectively.

The management and staff of the bank congratulated the organisers of the event who they said did a fantastic job and all other the participants for making the event a success.

There would be a capacity building seminar for athletes and coaches before the end of the year. The coaches are expected to be trained on athletes’ management, new coaching trends and developing world-class athletes.

A group of facilitators from the Caribbean who have produced Olympic and World gold medallists, will be in Ghana to facilitate the seminar.

“HFC bank believes that CSR must result in the long-term benefits for communities. It is our vision to build world-class athletes that are capable of competing and winning gold medals for the country,” Ms Balwin said.
