Help create jobs for youth - Asantehene charges PBC

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged the management of the Produce Buying Company (PBC) to explore ways to get the country’s unemployed youth off the streets.

He said the rapid socio-economic changes and financial difficulties of the times had made it challenging for the youth to find employment.

“I challenge you to expand the frontiers of employment through creativity to rid our streets of young men and women who appear overwhelmed by the rapid socio-economic changes and are unable to establish themselves firmly due to rising unemployment and financial challenges,” he said.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu made the call at the inauguration of Golden Bean Hotel, a subsidiary of the PBC in Kumasi, last Saturday.

He commended the PBC for building the hotel in Kumasi and advised the board and management of the company to bear in mind that cocoa, which remained the mainstay of the economy and their core business, should not play second fiddle to any other investment they might venture into.

“The ‘golden bean’, over the years, has proved a tested and trusted cash crop that has created employment for millions and brings in hard-earned foreign exchange”, he stated.

Competition

Otumfuo Osei Tutu reminded the management of the hotel that they had entered a competitive industry and should, therefore, provide excellent services for their clients.

He was, however, quick to advise that the quest to meet international standards should not be at the expense of promoting local culture and traditional values.

Deputy minister

The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, urged the management to build more Golden Bean hotels in other parts of the country.

She expressed worry that some hotels could neither maintain standards nor separate management from ownership.
