Guinean poses as high court judge to defraud teacher

The Hohoe Police have arrested a 35-year-old man who posed as a High Court judge to defraud a teacher of GH¢19, 500.

According to the police, Edward Gyau Wellington, said to be a Guinean, requested an amount of GH¢19, 500 from Madam Paulina Dogbe, a teacher at the Saint Teresa’s Demonstration School, to secure a good job for her 28-year-old daughter, but absconded after receiving the money.

How it happened

Briefing the media on the incident at Hohoe, the Hohoe Divisional Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Godwin Enim-Ansah, said the suspect in October 2014 introduced himself to the teacher as a high court judge who had been transferred to Hohoe from Tamale and was in dire need of accommodation.

Claiming to be a member of the Anglican Church, Wellington won the sympathy of Madam Dogbe, the wife of the head of the Anglican Church in Hohoe, after explaining that his bungalow was being occupied by another person.

Mr Ansah said the family of the woman offered him a place in their house where he stayed for six months.

During that period, he said, the suspect allegedly told the woman he could connect her daughter to secure a good job and requested an amount of GH¢19,500 to aid the process.

Suspect arrested

Mr Ansah said after receiving the money, the suspect fled to Ashaiman.

He said the victim reported the case to the Hohoe Police on July 19, 2016 and with the assistance of the Ashaiman Police, Wellington was arrested in his hideout on August 26.

In his caution statement to the police, the suspect allegedly admitted the offence and said he used the money to purchase a car.
