Ms Kwei will pursue a one-year MSc.in Science, Media and Communications at the Cardiff University.

Chevening scholarship

Chevening is the UK government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing leaders through global networks and sharing of scholarly knowledge.

Students from Ghana have been beneficiaries of the scholarship.

Last year, 990 applications were received out of which 22 applicants, including Ms Kwei, were selected to study in 18 different universities in the UK.

Send-off

A presentation and send-off ceremony was organised for the beneficiaries in Accra last Wednesday.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, observed that bilateral co-operation in education was an effective way of building the needed human resource to develop the country.

She said the Chevening scheme allowed for the exchange of scholarly knowledge, experience and cultural values.

According to Prof. Opoku-Agyeman, the competitive nature of the selection process gives credence to the fact that the country’s educational system is robust.

She urged the beneficiaries to endeavour to excel in their respective fields of study and come home to contribute towards the transformation of the country.

“This is a programme that will launch you into a rich pool of knowledge which you ought to tap to build your capacity. You need to return with a positive mindset to build a better future for the country,” the minister stated.

Significance

The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr Jon Benjamin, said the scholarship scheme had strengthened ties between the UK and Ghana.

He gave an assurance that the UK government would increase investment in the scheme to cover more applicants from Ghana.

Mr Benjamin also entreated the beneficiaries to strive to acquire the right leadership skills that would better position them to be change agents upon completion of their courses.

He announced that applications had opened for prospective beneficiaries for the 2017/18 academic year.
