The referral was made possible with sponsorship from the Graphic Needy Fund (GNF).

She arrived by air yesterday in the company of her mother and a nurse and is currently on admission at the Oncology Department of the hospital.

The Resident Medical Officer of Graphic Communications Group Ltd, Dr Jacqui Barnes, led the team of GNF that met Latifa and the family at the Kotoka International Airport and liaised with the authorities of the KBTH for the child’s admission.

According to Dr Sally Manu of the Oncology Department, who attended to Latifa on arrival at the hospital, further tests would be conducted on the child to determine the patient’s actual condition for treatment to proceed.

“The treatment would depend on what we get from the tests and the extent of the disease,” she said.

The Chairman of the Graphic Needy Fund, Mr Emmanuel Agyei Arthur, said the public had contributed generously towards Latifa’s treatment and the fund would do everything possible to save her life “for as long as treatment for her condition is available.”

Regular eye check-up

A nurse from the Tamale West Hospital, Madam Gloria Gogo, who escorted Latifa from Tamale, said the child’s condition was deteriorating because she was not getting adequate treatment.

She, therefore, called on parents to ensure that their children went for regular check up to prevent such conditions.

“It is good for parents to visit eye clinics for eye examination to prevent such health problems,” she advised.

Yasmeen scheduled for treatment

Meanwhile, the Graphic Needy Fund has arranged with the Neurosurgery Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for the treatment of Yasmeen Naa Djameh Frimpong to begin.

The Unit has scheduled her admission for April 27, 2017.

On March 2, 2017, the GNF launched an appeal for donations for the treatment of Latifa Karim and followed up with another appeal on March 10, 2017 for Jasmeen Naa Djameh, who is suffering from hydrocephalus.

In both cases, the public responded with donations towards their treatment.

According to Mr Arthur, the Daily Graphic will publish a photo report of donors in due course.
