Grant me talent to lead Ghana to prosperity — President Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has asked God to grant him the talent and the capacity to lead the people of Ghana to prosperity and progress, in spite of the many political, religious and ethnic differences.

He said the journey to building a new Ghanaian civilisation founded on a prosperous, fair and just society was going to be an onerous one that required the continued prayers of all Christians for divine help and human wisdom.

His desire for the people of Ghana, he said, was for a country where government was honest, the rule of law worked for all and there was social justice.

The President said this when he worshipped at the Accra Ridge Church yesterday — the last in the series of church services to thank God for his victory in the December 7, 2016 general election and his inauguration as the President of Ghana on January 7 this year.

New Ghanaian civilisation

“My hope and fervent wish is that the Lord will give me the talent and capacity to summon these people with all our political, religious and ethnic differences to achieve our common purpose of building a new Ghanaian civilisation founded on a prosperous, fair and just society where government is honest and where the rule of law works for all and where there is social justice,” he said.

He said he was very proud and deeply humbled that God had chosen him to lead the great and wonderful Ghanaian people in this critical time in their history.

President Akufo-Addo, therefore, called on all believers for continued prayer support “as I embark on this difficult journey, and I hope that the journey will be of benefit to all the people of Ghana”.

“Last Saturday, I was in Bamako in the Republic of Mali, attending the Africa-France Summit, and all the Presidents were profuse in their praise for what we have done here in Ghana, including those whose commitment to democracy is not quite clear.

“And, indeed, Francois Hollande, in his opening speech, specifically singled me out for mention and praise; all this because of the conduct, attitude and posture of our people,” he said with pride and satisfaction.

Grateful to former President Mahama

President Akufo-Addo also expressed his personal gratitude and that of the people of Ghana to  former President John Dramani Mahama for being graceful in defeat and ensuring a smooth transition.

“Our thanks on this occasion must also go to my predecessor President John Dramani Mahama who followed in the worthy footsteps of his illustrious predecessors, Presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor, and supervised a peaceful transition of power,” he said.

He said despite all the controversies surrounding the settlement of  former President Mahama, “his conduct had been a credit to our nation and we must all give thanks to the Lord for it”.

New change for Ghana

The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, the Right Reverend Professor Cephas Omenyo, who preached the sermon, said God had started a new thing in Ghana by bringing an era of newness.

The new thing that God was about to do, he said, should motivate Ghanaians to work extra hard and re-dedicate themselves to the task of nation-building, even in their current struggles.

He said some of the things that God was about to do for Ghana might sound outrageous and ambitious, but added that God always did things that were deemed humanly impossible.

“The God who does new things will heal our divisions and unite us. The heavens are open towards our nation, the favour of God is upon Ghana to heal our wounds and energise us to reconciliation, restoration and progress,” he urged.
