‘Govt will abide by Constitution in creation of new regions’

The Minister for Regional Reorganisation and Development, Mr Dan Kwaku Botwe, has given an assurance that the government will conform to all constitutional demands before the creation of new regions.

“The government has not created boundaries and given names to new regions, as is being speculated on social media,” he stated.

Mr Botwe was speaking at a workshop in Sunyani organised for members of the Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs to deliberate on the proposed creation of another region from the region.

It was organised and sponsored by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, to solicit views from the participants on the creation of the new region.

Constitutional demands

Addressing the participants, Mr Botwe explained that in as much as the government was committed to the creation of new regions, it had to satisfy all constitutional requirements to achieve that goal.

He said the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, would constitute a commission, which would liaise with the relevant stakeholders, to collate ideas on the need to create new regions and submit a report to him.

He stated that should the commission recommend that new regions be created, the President would submit the report to the Electoral Commission (EC) for a referendum to be conducted in the proposed areas.

Media briefing

Briefing the media after a closed-door meeting with the chiefs, the minister said all concerns raised by the chiefs had been addressed.

He explained that the President had already informed the people of the region that it would take 18 months to go through all the processes involved in the creation of the new region.

Other speakers

For his part, the President of the Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs and Omanhene of the Yeji Traditional Area, Pimampim Yaw Kagbrese V, thanked the President for setting in motion processes that would lead to their having another region.

A representative of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Dr Owusu Mensah, asked that the process be handled with care in order not to derail the purpose for the creation of new regional boundaries.

The Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Evans Osei Bobbie, called on the chiefs to collaborate with the Ministry of Regional Reorganisation and Development to make their dream for another region to be realised.
