Govt to increase YES fund to create more jobs

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Youth Enterprise Support (YES), Ms Helga Boadi, says the government would increase the YES Fund from GH¢10 million to GH¢25 million as part of efforts to create more job opportunities for the youth in the country.

She said the government recognised that without the requisite investment in the youth, there would not be meaningful development.

She was speaking in an interview with the Daily Graphic on the sidelines of a three-day workshop organised by her outfit for 50 beneficiaries of the Fund in the Central Region yesterday.

The workshop, which is being held in Kasoa in the Central Region, seeks to equip the participants with technical know-how in setting up and sustaining a business.

Enabling environment

Ms Boadi assuredthe participants that the government would continue to create an enabling environment and provide the needed resources for young people to grow their businesses.

The CEO explained that the programme was established as part of efforts by the government to address the unemployment situation in the country.

She, therefore, said the programme was to enable the youth to get access to funding which she indicated her organisation was offering as interest-free loans to beneficiaries to start up their respective businesses.

“YES is efficient, effective, sustainable and more responsive to the needs of the unemployed youth”, the CEO added.

Ms Boadi said the programme had directly supported some 56 young entrepreneurs with loans, while 26 others had been trained in livestock, poultry, vegetable and greenhouse farming.

Throwing more light on the greenhouse, she said they were going to put up 75 greenhouses at Dawhenya in Accra from next week.

Topics

Participants were taken through topics such as financial accounting, bookkeeping, marketing and evaluation.

A lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, Professor Dan Ofori, said the business environment was competitive for which reason entrepreneurs had to be innovative to be able to survive the contests.
