Govt commended for appointing more women

A policy think tank, IMANI Ghana, has commended the government for achieving its 2012 manifesto to improve women’s representation on all public boards.

“To a large extent, government has honoured this promise,” it said, citing, for instance, that for the first time in the history of the country, a woman, Mrs Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, had been appointed Ghana’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

This was contained in a study conducted by the organisation and launched in Accra last Thursday, as part of its assessment to evaluate the rate of execution of the programmes, policies and projects stated in the 2012 manifesto of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Women appointed under NDC

The study mentioned other women who were appointed under President John Dramani Mahama-led government to include the Controller and Accountant General, Madam Grace Francisca Adzoe; the Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs Matilda Baffour-Awua; the Government Statistician, Dr Philomena Nyarko; the Director General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr Angela El-Adas, and the Chair of Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Charlotte Osei.

Achievement on health

On health, the report said in the 2012 manifesto, the NDC promised to establish new district hospitals and more polyclinics in each of the 10 regions, “Currently, construction of new hospitals and polyclincs in five regions, rehabilitation of a hospital in other two regions is ongoing, and construction of hospitals as part of the EUROGNET project in the other three regions is ongoing.”
