The ministry is also deliberating on the need to ban some plastic materials used in homes to reduce waste in the system.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation (WRS), Mr Joseph Kofi Adda, made this known at a workshop for stakeholders from water and sanitation agencies at Atimpoku last Thursday.

The workshop was on the theme ‘Strategising for a Cleaner and Healthier Ghana...Delivering SDG 6’. It was to strategise to make Ghana a healthier and cleaner country.

Funding

Mr Adda said the government had secured $150 million World Bank support to finance the waste treatment plants.

He said the government was also working on some resources from China to support the initiative to make Ghana cleaner and healthier.

Mr Adda acknowledged that though previous governments had made efforts in diverse ways to provide clean water as well as ensure clean gutters, streets and to evacuate refuse heaps, there was still much work to be done to improve on clean water supply and sanitation generally.

Development partners
Mr Adda mentioned that there were development partners, both bilateral and multilateral, who had equally shown their desire to support Ghana to confront the daunting poor sanitation challenge.
