Global Evangelical Church calls for peaceful polls

The 2016 Synod of the Global Evangelical Church has ended with a call on Ghanaians to engage in their political activities in a peaceful manner before, during and after this year’s general election.

In a communique issued at the end of the Synod, the church further noted that no single political party’s manifesto could fulfil Ghana’s dream of becoming a great and prosperous nation.

For that reason, it said, there was the need for all political parties and civil society organisations to remain committed to contributing to the drawing of a single credible national development plan for the country.

Earlier, President John Dramani Mahama had reiterated his commitment to peaceful, free and fair elections in December this year.

The President, in a speech read on his behalf by the Chief of Staff, Mr Julius Debrah, at the thanksgiving service of the 2016 Synod of the church, assured Ghanaians of meeting the needs of the Electoral Commission and respecting its independence.

Commenting on the theme for the Synod, “Thy Kingdom Come, Living the Kingdom Life,” the President said it was appropriate, especially for the general election this year.

Peace and stability through our conduct

“This is really the time more than ever for us to allow the Kingdom of God and its continual peace and stability to be established in Ghana through our conduct before, during and after December 2016,”he said.

He called on the Church in Ghana to continue to play its role of being a watchdog over the spiritual and moral welfare of the nation, teaching the word of God, leading exemplary lives, and showing greater commitment to God and the state.

President Mahama called for continuous prayer for the nation to enhance the delivery of more development projects in the various sectors of the economy and the creation of more jobs for the youth.

The President commended the Global Evangelical Church for its various initiatives at empowering members through the establishment of development relief funds such as the Global Evangelical Students Fund (GESU) which he said was a bold step to complement government’s effort at promoting education for all.

Walk for peace

He also praised the Church for initiating the ‘Global Walk for Peace’ embarked upon in July this year to preach free and fair elections.

Rt Rev. Dr. Setorwu Ofori, the Moderator of the Global Evangelical Church, in his sermon to close the Synod, urged members of the church to ensure good relationship in every sphere they found themselves.

He also urged political parties and Ghanaians in general to cultivate and nurture healthy relationships as a key factor in ensuring effective dialogue on issues and peaceful coexistence and for the promotion of national development.

“While we prepare for a major election this year, we wish to appeal to all political parties to put Ghana first and be at their best in terms of conduct and in their response to issues in order to keep Ghana a peaceful country,” he stressed.
