The renovation, which cost GH¢100,000, involved tiling, masonry works, including  patching of cracked walls, painting, fixing of louvre blades, replacement of mosquito nets, electrical fittings, as well as replacement of furniture, curtains and a television set.

The renovation of the facility started last year as part of the company’s 10th anniversary celebrations and also its corporate social responsibility.

Addressing the handover ceremony, the group’s Head of Corporate Affairs and Marketing, Madam Nana Efua Rockson, stated that GLICO General was 10 years last year and as part of its celebrations, the group decided to give back to society by renovating the female orthopaedic ward.

“We have been successful in business because we are operating in Ghana. Ghana has been a peaceful country and we have had patronage from Ghanaians and when it was our 10th anniversary, we decided to give back to the society, our clients, stakeholders and the country that have supported us in business for many years,” she said.

Madam Rockson stated that as the company dealt with non-life insurance, including motor insurance, it decided to choose the accident centre.

“Knowing very well the accident rate in Ghana, and we doing motor insurance, we decided to give back something to an accident centre. If we can help rehabilitate an accident centre, then we also know that we are giving back our profit which we received from motor insurance back to Ghana,” she added.

Former state

The Head of Department of Accident and Orthopaedics, Dr Frederick Kwarteng, stated that the orthopaedic female ward C, although the biggest formal orthopaedic ward in the country,  had been in a deplorable state and needed renovation.

He stated that the situation of the ward before the renovation was unpleasant and undesirable.

“Everything here was in a deplorable state. The beds were destroyed, louvre blades were destroyed, all the concrete materials were damaged and the situation of the ward affected health delivery, likewise teaching and learning,” he said.

According to him, some patients declined admission because of the state of the ward, although they had injuries and needed to be there.

Current situation

Dr Kwarteng said he was convinced that the refurbished facility would provide a conducive environment for patients’ health care.

It  will also provide a decent environment for clinical staff, postgraduate residents and medical students under training.

“What GLICO has done is a national job because they thought about the country and decided to come to our aid, therefore it is a national assignment that they have embarked on. It is good and we are grateful to them,” he said.

Dr Kwarteng assured the group that the managers of the facility would ensure that the place was well-maintained, adding that they had put measures in place to stop anyone from misusing the facility.
