GIMPA builds capacity of public sector workers

A one-year training programme to equip public sector managers with trends on how to address development challenges has opened at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

This year’s edition of the Public Sector Management Training Programme (PSMTP) has 28 participants selected from four West African countries, namely, Ghana, Liberia, The Gambia and Sierra Leone.

The programme focuses on equipping middle-to-senior-level professionals from the public sector with the relevant knowledge and skills, especially in the area of poverty reduction.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Academic and Administrative Head of GIMPA, Professor Samuel Adams, said after the completion of the programme, participants would be able to use their new skills and competence to contribute to the collective pursuit of sustainable development.

He said the PSMTP was a GIMPA initiative funded by the African Capacity Building Foundation to help develop and equip public sector managers with the requisite knowledge.

Critical role

Prof. Adams said the public sector played a critical role in the effective administration of any country and it was imperative for the participants to harness and integrate their skills to be change ambassadors as far as reforms in the sector were concerned.

GIMPA, he said, had trained more than 400 students through the programme since its inception in 2010 and expressed the hope that participants, at the end of the course, would contribute to the collective pursuit of sustainable development and poverty reduction in Africa.

The Class President of the programme, Mrs Naomi Omani Marbell, commended GIMPA for the  programme, saying: “We hope to learn from one another and widen our horizon to face emerging challenges in Africa.”
