GhIE inaugurates body to regulate its activities

An 11-member National Engineering Advisory & Review Group (NEARG) to advise and review practical issues confronting the engineering sector in the country has been inaugurated.

The group, which will be independent in its activities, was inaugurated by the President of the Ghana Institute of Engineers (GhIE), Ing. Dr Kwame Boakye,  in Accra last Thursday.

He explained that the engineering community needed to come together to effectively discharge its responsibilities of applying expertise for national development. 

“To promote national development, engineering practitioners can no longer be shy of expressing their professional opinions. Our relevance comes from being a key agent in the national development effort,” he stated.

Significance

The establishment of the NEARG is one of the major measures to support the institution achieve its objective and also promote the achievement of the profession. 

“I believe that it doesn’t matter what we achieve as individuals; until we achieve group excellence, our country cannot be competitive on the global level.

“The group is, therefore, expected to lead in the development of the GhIE Bible that will capture the institution’s perspectives and recommendations on major engineering areas of interest to the nation,” Ing. Dr Boakye added.

Commendation

The Director of Works at the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Ing. John Tettey, commended the GhIE for the establishment of the group and called on other bodies to also come together to provide professional and technical advice for the government to accelerate the development of the nation.

The Chairman of the NEARG, Ing. Wilfred E.O. Apatu, expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him and thanked the GhIE Council for its support. 

He promised that the group would live up to expectation.

Members

Other members of the NEARG include Engineers Ben R. Aniagyei, Dr Robert E. Adjaye, Dr Joseph K.D. Annan, Dr Nicholas K. Smart-Yeboah,  Akwasi O. Pianim and Sylvia M. Arthur. 

The rest are  Andrew E. Quayson, Prof. Daniel M. Gyimah, Brigadier General Anthony Amedoh and Mr George Korley.

The ceremony was attended by past presidents of the GhIE, council members, representatives of other professional bodies and traditional leaders.
