Ghana sends $1million worth of relief items to Sierra Leone

The government of Ghana has mobilised relief items of about $1 million to disaster stricken Sierra Leone.

The items which will be airlifted to the country by the Ghana Airforce is expected to leave Accra by 1500GMT.

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is also expected to leave for Sierra Leone on Saturday to commiserate with the people of Sierra Leone after a mudslide and flooding killed about 300 people in the capital Freetown.

Some 600 people are thought to be missing while about 3,000 people have been rendered homeless.

The Minister of Information, Mustapha Hamid said in an interview on Accra-based Citi FM that personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) will also be sent to Sierra Leonne to help with search and rescue efforts.

“Yesterday, it was decided that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) should mobilise whatever resources that we believe the people in Sierra Leone need. All these resources are being mobilised and hopefully by 3pm Ghana Airforce military aircraft will take off with personnel of NADMO which will also include some people who are trained in search and rescue efforts.”

“In the next few hours the Vice President will also lead a government delegation to go to Sierra Leone to meet with the president and people to sympathise and see what other further assistance we can give,” he added.

He said, “Ghana government is looking at mobilising resources of about 1 million dollars. Emergency situations are emergency situations and therefore we do not have a choice but to dig into the national treasury at this moment and then find the money for this particular purpose.”
