Ghana School of Law supports galamsey fight

The Ghana School of Law has pledged to cooperate with the Attorney-General and other stakeholders in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as ‘galamsey’.

According to the school, the decision was made after observing the extent to which galamsey had destroyed the country’s water bodies and land.

In a statement signed by its Director of Legal Education, Mr Kwasi Prempeh-Eck, the Ghana School of Law said a dedicated team of experienced professional lawyers and legal consultants was committed to assisting in the drafting of a new comprehensive legislative framework for mining in Ghana.

Framework

The framework, it said, would, among other things, also help in reclaiming all lands used for mining activities and aid in the compilation of all relevant data in respect to individuals, groups and institutions affected by new government policies.

“The group of legal practitioners will design appropriate compensation packages for retaining and retooling all affected by the campaign against galamsey,” the statement explained.

It also stated that its support included isolating groups who constituted the destructive chain of actors engaged in galamsey, exploring the possibility of obtaining from persons and their financial collaborators compensatory remedies before domestic and international adjudicatory bodies, as well as adopting a comprehensive debt and loan management.

The school of Law would again assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for resolving consequential losses emanating from governmental action to halt illegal mining, it said.
