GH¢5.26 million so far spent on Ghana@60

The government has spent GH¢5.26 million so far on the 60th independence celebration of Ghana.

A Deputy Minister of Finance, Mr Kwaku Kwarteng, told Parliament on Thursday that the Ministry of Finance released GH¢5.26 million towards the celebration.

That, he said, comprised GH¢3.1 million from the government sources of funding and GH¢2.16 from the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF).

He was answering a question in the name of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Juaboso, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on how much the nation had spent on the celebration.

Breakdown of expenditure

Activities for the celebration include an Independence Day parade, lectures, I pledge campaign, the Jubilee Youth Entrepreneur Challenge, the legacy project to provide insight into the country's leaders, and relay torch for all regions.

Mr Kwarteng said out of the GH¢5.26 million, GH¢3.0 million went to the Office of the Chief of Staff at the Ghana@60 Secretariat while GH¢100,000 and GH¢2.16 million went to the 10 Regional Coordinating Councils (RCCs) and 216 District Assemblies respectively.

He said actual disbursements, according to the Office of Chief of Staff, indicated that an amount of GH¢2.98 million was spent by the 10 RCCs "bringing the total expenditure to GH¢5.24 million of the GH¢5.26 million released."

Corporate sponsorship

The MPs on the Minority side asked series of follow-up questions on how much corporate bodies had contributed towards the celebration.

But Mr Kwarteng answered repeatedly that he did not have the information on the contribution from the private sector as the programme was ongoing.

He promised to make the information available to Parliament in due course, saying "I will endeavour to bring that information to the House."
