This means that on the average, each person received about GH¢1,000 to support them improve on their livelihoods.

The disbursement is in fulfilment of the assembly’s mandate to disburse two per cent of its common fund allocation to PWDs.

It also formed part of the social intervention programme of the assembly to lessen the hardship on the vulnerable.

Advice

The Chief Executive Officer of the AMA, Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, advised the beneficiaries to put the funds to good use.

He also urged them to desist from begging on the streets and rather find some meaningful sources of income to support themselves and their families.

The Chairman of the Disability Fund Committee of the assembly, Mr Adjebu Lamptey, said the disbursement was the second by the assembly this year.

He said during the first quarter, 112 PWDs were offered a total of GH¢72,500 from the assembly with each person receiving between GH¢500 and GH¢1,000.

The chairman further admonished the beneficiaries to put the money to good use, since they would be made to account for it during a monitoring and evaluation exercise.

Selection

On how the beneficiaries were selected, the Presiding Member (PM) of the AMA, Mr Mustapha Ashong, said the assembly received support from the Ghana Federation of Disability (GFD) which presented a list of qualified people in the metropolis.

Additionally, he said the assembly’s Social Welfare Department, through its outreach programmes, identified some of the beneficiaries, while the assembly members also extended the support to those who did not belong to any of the PWD associations.
