GenCED initiates governance project in three districts

The Gender Centre for Empowering Development (GenCED) is implementing a two-year project in local governance at the Juaboso, Bia and Sefwi Wiawso districts in the Western Region of Ghana.

As part of the programme, the centre organised three district level stakeholder meetings between November 19 and 21, 2014 to introduce the project to various stakeholders and also solicit their support and commitment for the successful implementation of the project.

They were on the theme, “Strengthening Participation of Women in Geographically Deprived Communities”.

It was supported by the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF).

Participants were drawn from various communities in the three project districts, including chiefs, queenmothers, assembly members, officials of the district assemblies, persons with disabilities (PWD), leaders of women’s groups and associations.

GenCED is a civil society organisation based in Accra with a vision to become a leading grassroots organisation, through the empowerment of the marginalised, especially women,  economically, politically and financially to improve their livelihood.

The Executive Director of GenCED, Miss Esther Tawiah, said the project goal was to increase women’s participation in decision-making for a sustainable decentralised bottom-up planning process.

She explained further that the project seeks to institutionalise Women’s Group Advocacy (WOMGA) platforms made up of women leaders in the three districts to engage and dialogue with local government authorities in decision-making processes for sustainable decentralised bottom-up planning and public project implementation.

Miss Tawiah decried the poor  representation of women in the district assemblies across Ghana and urged the women to avail themselves of  the upcoming district assembly elections in 2015.

She said the driving force to the establishment of the women platforms in the three districts was to strengthen women to participate in local governance.

Miss Tawiah said GenCED and UNDEF were prepared to collaborate with all stakeholders to strengthen participation of women in geographically deprived communities in local governance.

The participants applauded the initiative, saying that it was a novelty that would go a long way to reduce mistrust between the local people and district assemblies in order to accelerate development in the districts.
