Past and present staff of the corporation, including its Managing Director, Major Albert Don-Chebe (retd), were honoured.

Others who were honoured included Mr Kwabena Yeboah, a sport presenter and commentator, and Mr Dan Afari Yeboah, presenter of the "What do you know competition" show.

Corporate bodies that had also played significant roles in the development of the institution were also given recognition.

The event was held on the theme, "80 years of dependable broadcasting: Evolving into the digital age".

Innovative programmes

In an address, Major Don-Chebe commended both present and past workers for their diverse contribution to the growth of the establishment.

He noted that the GBC had weathered 80 years of bewildering technological innovation and indicated that the management had outlined a number of innovative programmes aimed at looking at issues concerning the establishment, including switching from analogue to digital.

Funding

A Minister of State at the Presidency, Mr Kwasi Oppong Fosu, who represented the President, said the GBC had achieved some phenomenal successes and some setbacks but "you have prevailed".

He pledged the government’s support in the continuous funding of the public broadcaster to enable it to continue to deliver.

He added that the GBC had made a huge impact and continued to do so on the culture, politics and socio-economic development of the nation.

The Board Chairman of the corporation, Mr Richard Kwame Asante, said 80 years in the operation of the institution was a milestone worth celebrating.

"GBC values are the values of the nation, and we will continue to strengthen the values we provide," he stated.
