GAVA is the umbrella body for all visual arts groups in Ghana. It is recognised by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Arts as well as the National Commission on Culture.

It is also a member of the International Association of Art (IAA), Ghana Culture Forum and CopyGhana.

The elected officers, who have a two-year tenure, are Mr Baba Saiid from Agona Swedru (Chairman), Madam Diana Aggrey from Abura Dunkwa (Vice Chairperson), Mr. Charles Agbavitor from Agona Swedru (Secretary) and Madam Martha Bulley from Gomoa East Afransie (Treasurer).

The GAVA national president, Nana Otuo Owoahene Acheampong, commended officials of (CNC) in the Central Region for effectively organising artists at the district level for a firm regional association.

“This will bring GAVA to the grass roots to enable us to facilitate the formation of zonal branches within the districts. Such developments tie in perfectly with GAVA’s Constitutional mandate,” the national president said.

Earlier in a welcome address, the director of the Central regional CNC, Madam Christiana Carl Oparebea, noted that with the world growing smaller and more competitive, it was necessary for all sorts of groupings and businesses to merge and become more competitive.

She said it was, therefore, time for artists to move away from their individualistic business pursuits and come together to champion their collective welfare.

Madam Oparebea stated that artists stood to gain from multiple sources for grants to develop their businesses if they effectively organised themselves into associations or federations.

Also present at the meeting was Mr Lawrence Kwaku Agyeman, GAVA’s General Secretary.
