Funerals, drumming, noise making banned in Asanteman until...

Following the official announcement of the death of the Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem ll, the Kumasi Traditional Council has placed a ban on all funeral rites, drumming and all other forms of noise making throughout the Asante Kingdom until the burial of the late queenmother.

Notwithstanding the ban, families could bury their deceased relatives but they will not be allowed to organise any funeral until the final funeral rites of the late Asantehemaa have been held.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, officially broke the news of the Asantehemaa’s passing to the Kumasi Traditional Council at its meeting in Kumasi on Thursday.

Briefing the council, the Asantehene said he was informed about the death of the queenmother, who was also his mother, on Monday morning.

He said the one-week celebration would be observed at the Manhyia Palace at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 24, 2016.

Nana Serwaa Ampem died last Monday night at the age of 109, having reigned for 39 years.

She is said to have died peacefully in her sleep.

The Asantehemaa saw the reign of the late Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, who reigned from 1970 to 1999.
