The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Ms Sherry Ayittey,  distributed the outboard motors to fishermen in the six communities in the Gomoa West District in the Central Region last Tuesday.

At the ceremony at Apam to present the outboard motors, the   minister said the government would soon impliment an insurance policy  to insure the lives and operations of fishermen,

The policy, dubbed ‘Fishermen Insurance Policy’, has the objective of protecting the lives of fishermen in the course of their activities so that the government would support them in times of eventualities.

Ms Ayittey said the policy would ensure that the government pay compensation to fishermen or their families in cases of accidents, deaths and damages to their canoes while on their fishing expedition.

Insurance policy

The minister said just as other workers insured their lives and their properties, the government, through the ministry, deemed it necessary to insure the activities of fishermen so that the compensation due them could be paid to them when the need arose.

She urged the fishermen to take advantage of the policy when implemented so that they could be covered appropriately.

Scholarship

According to Ms Ayittey, plans were also underway for the provision of scholarship for brilliant, needy children of fishermen so that they could access quality education to become responsible adults.

She explained that the move was intended to build the capacity of children in the coastal areas so that they would be better placed to contribute to the development of their communities as well as the nation.

DCE

The District Chief Executive for Gomoa West, Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, commended the government for the provision of  the outboard motors as they would enhance the operations of the fishermen in the district.

He drew the attention of the fishermen to the fact that the motors formed part of the government’s efforts in improving their business.

He assured them that the government was doing everything possible to stop pair trawling in the country.
