First Lady salutes mothers for their struggles

First Lady Rebecca Naa Okaikor Akufo-Addo has wished all mothers and mother figures in Ghana a happy Mother’s Day, and saluted mothers for the struggles they go through as they work tirelessly to instil discipline, protect and create opportunities for a better life for their children.

“Today is Mother’s Day and I salute all mothers and mother figures," she said, pointing out that, “Motherhood is a tough job. Mothers never rest. A mother would move heaven and earth for her child. Mothers shape our lives, nurture our talents and inspire us to achieve greater heights. Every mother deserves to have this special day.”

She added: “I wish to use this opportunity to urge all mothers to keep up the good work even in the face of challenges, knowing that in due course we will all enjoy the fruit of our labour.”

Mrs Akufo-Addo, in a statement, urged everyone to appreciate all the mothers and mother figures in their lives because their activities and achievements were phenomenal, pointing out that she was hopeful of more fruitful motherhood years ahead.

As a mother herself, she said she was of the opinion that whether a woman in one’s life was a biological mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, foster or adoptive mother, they deserved “a thank you on this occasion” in appreciation of the tremendous role they had played as mothers.

Save A Child, Save A Mother campaign

Mrs Akufo-Addo appealed to the public to demonstrate their appreciation to mothers as Ghana joins the international community to honour mothers by contributing to the Save A Child, Save A Mother campaign.

The campaign, which is the First Lady’s initiative, was targeted to raise an initial amount of GH¢10 million for the construction of a new Mother and Baby Care Unit at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to ease congestion at the current unit which was causing  avoidable maternal and infant deaths at alarming rates at the hospital.

Hospital authorities say on the average, four babies die every day.

“As we celebrate Mother’s Day, I wish to remind all Ghanaians of the needless deaths of mothers and children at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. No woman should die giving life to another and no mother should lose a child she has carried for nine months.”

“As we honour mothers, let us all resolve to contribute to the Save A Child, Save A Mother project by contributing in cash or in kind to the special fund to build a new unit for the Komfo Anokye maternity,” she said.

Mrs Akufo-Addo called on the public to contribute through the Save A Child, Save A Mother account at Access Bank.
