The projects include a teachers’ quarters, a kindergarten complex, a market, a public place of convenience and a new party office for Ampoma in the Kintampo South Constituency.

At a durbar of the chiefs and people of Ampoma to mark the inauguration of the project, Mrs Mahama said it was common for teachers transferred to the rural areas not willing to accept their postings due to lack of accommodation, and expressed optimism that the teachers’ quarters would make life more comfortable for teachers as well as provide them with a sound mind to teach the children.

Economic activities

Mrs Mahama said the KG complex would also benefit mothers of children between the ages of three and five years because they would have time to attend to their economic activities.

She explained that when re-elected, President John Dramani Mahama would be committed to reviewing  and implementing the national policy on Early Childhood Care and Development and also broaden parental participation in the implementation of the policy.

Free uniforms

She added: “Similarly, the provision of free school uniforms, free exercise books and free footwear for needy pupils; expanding the School Feeding Programme to all public basic schools in rural and suburban communities; and ensuring an improvement in Special Needs Education, would be scaled-up in order to reduce the financial burden on parents and increase school attendance.”

She said the Lordina Foundation in the last several years had advocated the need for all to have equal opportunity or access to quality education and other basic needs in life and therefore, the foundation had been assisting some schools in the country with computers and facilitated the construction of a dining hall at Chereponi in the Northern Region.

Education sector

Still under education, Mrs Mahama explained that the NDC government, knowing how crucial education was had invested a lot in the education sector.

Touching on the new Ampoma Market, the First Lady said President Mahama had indicated his strong desire and commitment to rehabilitate all markets in the country, in line with the government’s strategy of expanding opportunities for traders across the country.

Mrs Mahama also urged the community to ensure the proper maintenance of the projects for the future generation, indicating that the public place of convenience was to ensure the government’s desire to end open defecation by the year 2021.

On behalf of the Ampomahene, Nana Nyarko Kata, the Nkronza Sumakwahene, Nana Baah Bretwum, thanked the First Lady and the government for executing development projects in the communities, indicating that the projects would go a long way to improve the lot of the members of the community and its environs.

With the First Lady’s entourage were the NDC parliamentary candidate for Kintampo South, Ms Felicia Adjei; the NDC National Women’s Organiser, Hajia Zenab Mahama; the Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Eric Opoku, who in separate remarks, urged the people to ensure peace during the December 7 elections, and also vote to maintain the party in power, for a continuation of its good works.
