Fire razes KOSS dormitory rooms - 140 Students displaced

Fire has burned three cubicles in one of the dormitories of Konongo-Odumasi Senior High School (SHS), popularly called (KOSS), leaving 140 students displaced.

Personal effects and books of the student occupants of the rooms were reduced to a pile of rubble.

None of the students were hurt as they were all at prep before the incident happened last Saturday night. However, they were left with only the attire they wore during the evening study session.

Briefing

The Headmaster of the school, Mr Benjamin Kwaku Baah, who briefed the Daily Graphic, said the students saw fire burning in some parts of one of the dormitories at about 7:45 p.m.

He said when the Konongo Fire Station was called, they responded immediately to quench the fire which had gutted three cubicles in the dormitory — House Six.
The headmaster said the students were traumatised but were counselled to remain calm. They have since been transferred to a new dormitory.

Mr Baah said the Municipal Chief Executive for Asante-Akyem Central, Mrs Susanna Akomea, the Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Anyimadu Antwi, the police and other stakeholders had been duly notified about the incident.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Simon Osei Mensah, as well as officials from the Ashanti Regional office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have visited the school to ascertain the situation at first-hand.

Donations

Subsequently, donations have been pouring in from some benevolent individuals. They include the MCE and the MP who had donated GH¢1,500, a set of mathematical instruments, exercise books, boxer shorts, plates and cutleries to the school to be distributed to the affected students.

The MP for Asante-Akyem North, Mr Andy Appiah-Kubi, who is an old student of the school, and the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Asante-Akyem North, Mr Francis Oti-Boateng, have also presented 20 student mattresses, a bale of jackets and four packets of roofing sheets to the school.

Dr Joe Oteng-Adjei, former Minister of Energy who is also an old student, donated 600 pieces of T-shirts to the affected students.
