Coconut Groove Regency Hotel catches fire

Parts of the Coconut Groove Regency Hotel at North Ridge in Accra was Saturday destroyed when fire erupted in one of its buildings.

The Amansan Television (ATV) and four commercial offices of Groupe Nduom which were on the same block in the hotel's yard were badly affected.

The fire was said to have started from the studios of ATV and took considerable amount of time for fire officers to bring it under control.

The Regency Hotel and its restaurant, guest rooms and conference facilities were intact and were not touched by the fire, according to Mr Richmond Keelson, who is in charge of Corporate Affairs at Groupe Nduom.

The hotel also houses GN bank both owned by former presidential candidate and founder of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom.

In a statement, Mr Richmond Keelson said somewhere between 5.00 and 5.30pm on Saturday, staff of Amansan Telebision (ATV) noticed fire burning apparently from the direction of an air conditioning unit in the studio.

When an alarm, was raised, everyone ran to safety and an urgent call was made to the Ghana Fire Service to come and help put out the fire.

He said two fire tenders came soon followed by three more.  After about an hour and a half, the Fire Service personnel were not able to contain the fire at the studio and it spread to other offices on the same block as the ATV studio.

Mr Keelson explained that the Regency Hotel and its restaurant, guest rooms and conference facilities were intact and were not touched by the fire.

Mr Billy Anaglate in charge of Public Relations at the Ghana National Fire Service explained it took a considerable amount of time for them to control the fire because the building was mainly made of wood.

Mr Anaglate said a total of about 13 fire engines were sent to the scene to fight the fire.

The Interior Minister, Mr Ambrose Dery who visited the scene of the incident whilst the fire men were battling the blaze asked for a full scale investigations.
