Fire at Kumasi Central Market (photos)

A fire outbreak at the Kumasi Central Market Monday afternoon destroyed shops and goods worth several thousands of Ghana cedis.

It happened in a three-storey building located opposite the main central market building. The old Kumasi central market building itself was not touched.

According to Graphic Online's Kumasi reporter, Joseph Kyei-Boateng, personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were at the scene to fight the fire.

The fire was said to have started after a KIA truck, loaded with mattresses touched an overheard electric cable and caught fire.

The fire spread from the truck into the nearby shops and destroyed the goods.

Eyewitnesses said the driver of the truck who had heaped the mattresses ignored a warning.

The truck was to offload the goods in one of the shops at the scene.
