Fatih College provides scholarship to 30 pupils

Fatih College, a basic and secondary educational institution operated in Tamale by Fatih, a Turkish non-governmental organisation, has provided scholarship to 30 pupils in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions to continue their junior high school (JHS) education.

Since its inception in September 2012, the college has provided full scholarships to over 200 brilliant, needy male students in the Northern Region to enable them to further their education at the JHS and senior high school levels.

The Principal of the school, Mr Mehmet Ozleyen, who disclosed this in an interview with the Daily Graphic, said most needy, brilliant children in the region were not always able to continue their education after the primary level due to the inability of their parents to meet the financial demands of their JHS and SHS education.

A total of 626 pupils from the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions took part in an examination during which they were tested in three core subjects, namely Mathematics, Science and English language, and the best 30 were awarded schorlarships.

Complementing government’s effort

Mr Ozleyen said the institution of the scholarship scheme was a positive step to complement government’s effort to provide quality education and also make education accessible to every child to enable them to contribute their quota to the development of the country.

“The school for the meantime is sponsoring only male students because our current place is very small and can only provide dormitories to a few. We are certain that after the completion of our new school building which is more spacious, we will be able to provide more dormitories for both male and female students as well as sponsor more children,” he said.

Right to quality education

Mr Ozleyen said the organisation believed that every child had the right to quality education and as a charitable institution, they were ever ready to sponsor those who excelled in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to any tertiary institution of their choice.

“Let us not only look up to the government for everything, since government cannot do all that we want, but as stakeholders who have the interest of the people at heart, let us all come together and play a collective role in helping the needy to also get access to education” he said.

He urged other students to learn very hard so that they could also benefit from the scholarship scheme.
