Family Health Medical School students organise health screening at Teshie

Medical students of the Family Health Medical School have offered free health screening to people living within the Teshie community and its environs in Accra.

About 650 people were screened for malaria, Hepatitis B & C, and blood sugar levels, among other ailments.

Speaking during the exercise,  the President of the Students Representative Council (SRC) of the medical school, Mrs Amanda Wumbei, said the exercise was their first initiative to building a tradition of community service to the people of Teshie.

“As part of our way of building a tradition of community service, the students are given back to the Teshie community by holding our first medical screening at Teshie,” Mrs Wumbei said.

“The screening will foster strong relationship between the medical school and the community,” she said.

Basic health

The President of the medical school, Professor Enyonam Yaw Kwawukume, in a speech read on his behalf, advised the community to observe basic health practices, which included proper hand washing, intake of local fruits and vegetables and less fatty foods.

Prof. Kwawukume said that moderation should be exercised in case of taking alcoholic beverages and stressed the need for people to make personal decisions to stop smoking.

Cutting back HIV/AIDS

In a speech read on her behalf, the Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC), Dr Mokowa Blay Adu Gyamfi, said plans to cut back HIV/AIDS involved setting ambitious targets and accelerating the delivery of high impacts HIV prevention.

The plans, she said, included treatment services to ensure that by 2020, 90 per cent of people living with HIV would know their status.
