He said the development of human capital in the universities was fundamental to the development of states because it inculcated in students the right attitudes, skills and problem-solving abilities to become agents of change.

Mr Adjaho made the statement in a speech read on his behalf by the first Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mr Ebo Barton-Odro, at the sixth congregation of the EPUC in Ho, during which 474 students graduated from the institution.

He said low level human capital development retarded a country’s growth and development, pointing out that the collective attitudes, skills and problem-solving abilities of a nation’s human capital determined its performance and productivity and were considered the most important factors in the production of goods and services for the growth of every economy.

Progressive thinking

The Speaker asked students to engage in deep and progressive thinking geared towards creating change and also urged them to be disciplined, honest and ambitious and inject a strong desire for excellence in all their endeavours.

“If you are to be successful, you must aspire to be the best in whatever you do. You should not be satisfied with mediocrity,” he advised them.

Mentorship

In an address read on his behalf, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Professor D.D. Kuupole, noted that the university had grown steadily since its establishment in 2007 and said it would continue to mentor, nurture and support the EPUC until it was fully chartered.

He asked the graduands to be role models at their workplaces, in their communities and society at large and exhibit exemplary conduct to become worthy ambassadors of the EPUC and, by extension, good ambassadors of the UCC.

State of the university

In his report, the President of EPUC, Reverend Dr Cyril G.K. Fayose, said from a humble beginning with 54 students, the student population had increased to 1,515, which was expected to further rise to 3,000 when 13 more programmes are introduced at the university.

He said a memorandum of agreement had been signed with IMN  Engineering Limited to source funds from the European Union for the construction of a permanent campus at Adaklu-Wumenu, adding that four campuses would be developed simultaneously — Central Municipal in Ho, Greenhills at Peki, Adaklu Gbleve and Adaklu Wumenu.

Rev. Dr Fayose called on estate developers to support the university to construct facilities on a build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis.

He disclosed that the university was ready to set up more schools covering Computer Science, Modern Languages, Education, Agriculture and Environmental Science and Social Sciences by September this year.
