Energy Commission urged to enforce regulations on secondhand goods

The General Manager of Ederick Ghana Limited, sole distributors of Whirlpool products in Ghana, Mrs Gwenda Sam, has expressed worry about the influx of secondhand electrical appliances such as computers, printers, fridges and television sets into the country.

The phenomenon, she said, contributes to the increase in energy consumption in the country while putting to question the commitment of the Energy Commission to prevent the dumping of such products according to law.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic to commemorate the company’s 30th anniversary, she prevailed on the commission to do more to prevent the importation of such high energy-consuming appliances.

She said effective supervision by the commission would ensure that consumers are protected from the harmful effects of such products.

Mrs Sam said the company currently offered free delivery of all purchased appliances within the Accra and Tema metropolis and also in Kumasi, with all the appliances coming with a 12-month warranty on manufacturer's defects.

“With a workforce of about 80 trained employees, our staff have been highly trained to offer nothing short of the best customer service and the best shopping experience to all our customers and that simply puts Ederick Limited way above all our competitors,” she said, adding “Customers must be careful when they are buying in order not to fall prey to sub-standard brands.”

She said the company had also created its own brand of appliances by name EDK, which include cookers, air conditioners, fridges, chest freezers and water dispensers.

The general manager also pointed out that as part of plans to build and sustain customer service and satisfaction, Ederick Limited and its subsidiary, Ederick Services, provided effective and efficient after-sales and repair services, as well as installation of all products that it placed on the market.

30th anniversary

As part of its 30th anniversary, the company intends to treat its customers to birthday surprises.

Mrs Sam said the surprises would be in the form of discounts on all products, as well as free servicing of appliances.
