Energy Commission sets up innovation committee

A 10-member innovation committee for the Energy Commission was inaugurated in Accra yesterday, with a call on the members to work at improving the energy sector.

The committee is to come up with ideas that will help make the commission more effective and efficient in its work.

The Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Mr Mahama Ayariga, who made the call, said the time had come for people to work at ensuring that they used energy efficiently to the overall benefit of the country.

He called on the committee to come up with ideas on how to get people to put up more energy-efficient buildings, so that the country could conserve energy.

The committee

Members of the committee, who are all members of staff of the Energy Commission, are Mr Solomon Sarpong, Chairman; Mr Salifu Addo, Co-Chair; Ms Dorothy Adjei, Secretary; Mr Kofi Adu Agyarko, Ms Judith Ron Oppong-Tawiah, Ms Alice Ayoko, Mr Kwadwo Ampadu, Mr Simpson Attieku, Mr Richard Donkor and Mr Frederick Kenneth Appiah.

The Chairman of the Energy Commission Board, Dr Kwame Ampofo, in an interview after the inauguration, said the Innovation Committee was needed to help with the development of the commission.

He said members of the committee were selected because of their expertise and technical know-how. 

Energy Commission

The Energy Commission is required by law to regulate and manage the development and utilisation of energy resources in the country, as well as provide the legal, regulatory and supervisory framework for all providers of energy in the country, specifically by granting licences for the transmission, wholesale, supply, distribution and sale of electricity, natural gas and related matters.

It is to serve as the government's energy policy adviser by making national energy policy recommendations to the minister of energy.

It is also to formulate national policies for the development and utilisation of indigenous energy resources, particularly renewable energy, which includes solar, wind and biomass.

The commission is also to prepare, review and update periodically indicative national plans to ensure that all reasonable demands for energy are met.
