They were arraigned in court on Wednesday, Graphic Online’s Western regional correspondent, Kobla Dotsey Aklorbortu reports.

They pleaded not guilty and have been admitted to bail in the sum of Gh¢2000 each, with three justified sureties each.

They will reappear in court on May 17, 2017. They were still in police custody as of press time since they were yet to satisfy the bail conditions.

300 policemen drawn from various stations in the region took part in the swoop on Tuesday and those arrested were screened at the regional police headquarters in Sekondi-Takoradi.

The Ekpu community has in recent weeks been the scene of unrest following the alleged death in custody of a suspect.

The community rose against the police whom they accused of highhandedness in the death of Kwabena Assuah, alleged to have stolen a ladies dress worth Gh¢10 and kept in cells beyond stipulation.

While the police say he died after being assaulted by cellmates, the community members are convinced policemen on duty were responsible for his death and attacked the police station a fortnight ago, manhandling those on duty and causing some damage.
