ECG briefs students, communities on operations

The regional office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Western Region has initiated an exercise to educate students from selected educational institutions in the region on the company’s operations.

The campaign, which forms part of the company’s stakeholder engagement and communications strategy, targets students of senior high schools (SHSs), nursing/midwifery institutions and colleges of education.

Energy conservation

The focus is to enlighten the students to appreciate the need for energy conservation through the wise use of power in their homes and schools and also on the operations of ECG.

After the initial presentations, the officials gave the students the opportunity to ask questions pertaining to the company’s role in the country’s power supply chain, tariffs and billing, energy conservation and other customer service issues.

The Western Regional General Manager of the ECG, Ing. Jacqueline Ofori-Atta, said this year, the company was targeting 20 out of the 91 SHSs in the region, three out of the six nursing/midwifery training colleges and all three colleges of education for its education programme.

She said already, three SHSs, namely Archbishop Porter Girls’ Senior High School in Takoradi, Baidoo Bonsoe Senior High Technical School at Agona-Nkwanta and Shama Senior High School at Shama, had been covered.

Stakeholders

The ECG, Ing. Ofori-Atta said, was committed to building mutually beneficial relationships with its various stakeholders through such engagements, as a positive step to making information available to the public.

“Educating the young generation, who are our potential customers in the various educational institutions, is a key part of our strategy to improve customer service delivery,” she noted.

The Regional Public Relations Officer, Mr. Philip Osei Bonsu, revealed that the company would also, in the coming months, roll out an exercise to engage fisherfolks in the about 47 landing beaches in the six coastal districts of the Western Region.

He noted that the educational campaign would also target other identifiable bodies such as keep fit clubs, transport associations and teachers’ associations.

Last year, the regional office embarked on a similar exercise, with visits to selected state and private institutions – Bank of Ghana, Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Regional Education Office, Nagel Adventist Hospital, Ellembelle District Assembly and the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly.

The town hall

The company also held a town hall meeting with all stakeholders in Prestea to review the company’s performance in the area over the past two years, after the town and eight adjoining communities – Heman, Bondai, Nsuta, Kpoviaji, Kwameniampa, Obuoho, Brumase and Ayinam - were hooked onto the national grid.

At the meeting, the District Manager, Mr George Amoah, praised the people of Prestea for their patience in the face of some initial implementation challenges.

The community also had the opportunity to raise issues about billing, power supply quality and reliability, and customer service.
