Polls resume in Jaman North Constituency

The Electoral Commission (EC) has overturned a decision by stakeholders in the Jaman North Constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region to postpone elections in the area.

At a press conference in Accra, the Public Relations Director of the EC, Mr Eric Kofi Dzakpasu said the decision of the DISEC to adjourn the polls was contrary to the provisions of Regulations 36 (1) of the C.I. 94.

According to him, the regulation stipulates that “In the event of any development, interruption at a polling station which may occasion the need to adjourn the poll, the presiding officer shall in consultation with the returning officer and subject to the approval of the Commission adjourn the proceedings at the polling station to the following day.”

“So at a meeting of the Commission, the decision to suspend polls at the Jaman North Constituency has been reversed and the Commission directs that polls should resume in the Jaman North Constituency and as we speak election materials have been dispatched and voting has resumed,” Mr Dzakpasu said.

He added that as at 1:30pm, the EC’s Regional Director in the Brong Ahafo Region had confirmed through the District Electoral Officer that the materials had been dispatched and voting had resumed.

Stakeholders in the Jaman North Constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region have decided to postpone the elections to tomorrow (December 8) as a result of a disagreement over the transferred voters' list.

Members of the National Democratic Congress prevented the voting from going on today because of a disparity in the number of voters on the transfer list which was provided to the parties and the Electoral Commission's copy.

While the number of transferred voters on the EC list was 5 that on the list provided to the political parties was 506.
