Duakor, Ekurufo Mpoano get landing beach c’ttees

The long cherished desire of the people and fishers of Duakor, near Cape Coast  and Ekurufo Mpoano at the Bosomtwe-Sam Fishing harbour at Essikado in Sekondi have been fulfilled with the establishment of  landing beach committees  to enable them get direct allocation of premix fuel to ply their trade.

The seven-member committee each for the two communities constituted by the local fishers and endorsed by the Cape Coast Municipal and the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assemblies were formally inaugurated by Mr Kweku Sersah-Johnson, Chairman of the National Premix Fuel Committee at separate ceremonies at Essikado and Duakor.

In his inaugural address, Mr Sersah-Johnson said the idea behind the government’s subsidisation of the premix fuel was to improve the economic and social wellbeing of the fishermen and women and the fishing communities in general.

He said artisinal fishers in Ghana constitute a major force in the economic development of the country and ought to be encouraged and supported in whatever ways to continue to contribute their quota to the overall development of Ghana.

It is for this and other related reasons, the Premix Chairman explained, that the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, the National Premix Fuel Committee and the government continue to rollout policies and programmes such as the subsidy of the cost of outboard motors for the fishermen and women, the facilitation of soft loans for the fish mongers, a scholarship scheme for children of the fishers and the construction of cold storage facilities.

The Omanhen of Essikado, Nana Professor Kobena Nketsia and the Chief of Duakor, Togbui …… expressed their appreciation and that of the communities to His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama through whose instrumentality, they disclosed, the landing beach comiitees have been established for them. They pledged that they will ensure that margins accruing from the sale of Premix Fuel will be used for the development of the communities as per the regulations of Premix fuel Committee.

Nana Prof. Nkestia said the establishment of the Landing Beach Committee for Ekurufo Mpoano (Bosomtwe-Sam Fishing Harbour} was of historical, cultural and traditional significance to the people of Sekondi and its environs in addition to its economic importance to the Fishers in the area.

Duakor is a migrant fishing community near the Cape Coast University populated mainly by Ewes. It will be recalled that during a recent visit by His Excellency President John Mahama to the town, Togbui …the Chief of the Community appealed to the President for the establishment of a Landing Beach Committee for Duakor and its environs.
