Robert Tawiah was said to have thrown a fowl at his wife resulting in her fall and subsequent death for intervening in a quarrel between him and a neighbour.

Presenting the facts of the case in court, a Senior State Attorney, Mr George Sackey, said Ama Jejeba, 26, was married to Tawiah, a driver at Dompim in the Western Region.

He said on July 30, 2013, Tawiah had a confrontation with a neighbour over some chicks of a fowl, which degenerated into a very hot exchange of words. Ama is said to have intervened and the neighbour left.

Mr Sackey said Ama quarrelled with Tawiah for giving out the neighbour’s chicks which were hatched in their kitchen.

The prosecutor said Tawiah, however, got infuriated over the intervention of his wife and not long after, he entered the kitchen, picked up the fowl which was hatching and threw it at Ama, causing her to fall backwards from the stool on which she was sitting.

Tawiah, however, did not pay attention to her and delayed in seeking help for the victim who was later pronounced dead.

The prosecution in addressing the court, said from the facts of the case, Tawiah intended causing the death of the victim.

However, counsel for Tawiah, Mr Emmanuel Beckley, said the prosecution had not led sufficient evidence against the accused as per the charge of murder.

The presiding Judge, Justice Peter Ababio, took the juror through all the bits of evidence presented by both the prosecution and defence.

The jurors subsequently pronounced Tawiah guilty of manslaughter.

Following the plea of mitigation by counsel for the defence and response by the prosecution, Justice Ababio sentenced Tawiah to five years in prison with hard labour.
