‘Don’t use stones to stop gas leakage’

The Ledzokuku Krowor Municipal Fire Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Divisional Officer Two (DOII) Theophilus Dangbe, has called on residents of Teshie and Nungua to stop the practice of placing stones on their leaking liquefied petroleum gas(LPG) cylinders, ostensibly to stop leakages, while they cooked.

He also asked them to stop the habit of overloading electrical sockets and extension boards in order to reduce the pressure and heat on them, saying those practices could lead to fire outbreaks.

Socket overloads

Mr Dangbe observed that some residents placed stones on their leaking LPG cylinders to stop the cylinders from leaking, while others used one socket or extension board for different gadgets at the same time, and warned that those practices were dangerous and could result in fire outbreaks.

“People should stop the practice of overloading boards with many electrical appliances. I have noticed that people put fridges, irons, heaters and their mobile phone chargers on one board, while others leave the phone chargers constantly in the sockets and just fix the chargers in the phones whenever they want to charge the phones. It is a bad practice and must be stopped,” he cautioned.

Mr Dangbe made the call at the launch of the GNFS Fire Safety Week to sensitise communities in the municipality to fire outbreaks, with a focus on the Nungua Market.

He said the focus this year was to educate market people on fires and how to prevent them from occurring at the markets and homes and expressed the belief that the education would help achieve its target of reducing fires in the municipality this year.

He said when the 24 volts that sockets should take was exceeded, it resulted in overheating.

“We know that when the three components of fire-heat, fuel and air come together, there could be a fire outbreak,” he said.

 Float

During a float which formed part of the launch, the team distributed brochures and stickers on fire safety and educated the people on fire safety.

They visited filling stations, shops and the Nungua Market.
