Don’t indulge in worldly pleasures — Rev. Appertey

The outgoing Dangme –Tongu Presbytery Chairman, Reverend Fred Nuer Appertey, has admonished Christians not to spend their lives on worldly pleasures to the neglect of their worship.

He described as unfortunate the practice by some charlatans who preach only messages of material acquisitions and prosperity to gullible congregants at the expense of their salvation stressing that “salvation is not a tea party.”

“These so called men of God who preach only prosperity messages to people whose minds are gullible are not helping in the spread of Christ’s message which they claim to be preaching, but rather scattering the flock of Christ as they continue to mislead them with messages of monetary success in life,’’ he indicated.

Rev. Appertey was giving his farewell sermon on the theme ‘Bearing the cost of discipleship’ at the Odumase Krobo Zimmerman Presbyterian Church of Ghana.

He is the 10th Dangme – Tongu Presbytery chairperson since the creation of the Presbytery in 1972. He took over from Rev. Nii Teiko Dagadu on September 1, 2011.

Transfers

The former chairman further observed that transfer of some ministers in the Presbytery had become a bane to them as they saw it as punishment and appealed to those ministers to accept such changes in good faith.

He explained that biblically, the entire world is a pulpit of Christ for which reason any committed and dedicated minister should accept postings with open arms.

Rev. Appertey expressed appreciation to the entire presbytery for the support and cooperation he enjoyed during his five-year tenure of office and asked them to extend same support to his successor.

Commendation

The new Moderator elect, Reverend Professor Cephas Narh Omenyo, lauded Rev. Appertey for the good leadership role he played that lifted up the image and development of the presbytery. He particularly commended Rev. Appertey on his leadership style in the mobilisation of funds for the presbytery and the development of both Dangme and Ewe languages which he said had enhanced reading, singing and worshipping.

“These are some of the things that are dear to my heart as a new Moderator elect and I want to identify myself with these great achievements of Rev. Appertey,” Rev. Prof. Omenyo stressed.
