The Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle, who made the call, said the maintenance of peace, law and order would inspire the confidence of Ghanaians in the run-up to the December 7 general election.

“Ghana is our only heritage and we must do everything to make it an oasis of peace in order to be the proud beacon of democracy in Africa,” he said.

The service, interspersed with  Bible reading, praises and adoration, was attended by dignitaries and representatives from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

 Homily

Delivering the homily, Most Rev. Palmer-Buckle said service to prisoners was not just to earn a living but also a vocation.

According to him, prison personnel had a role to protect the dignity of, rehabilitate and restore individuals who had been seen as detrimental to the society.

He said their exemplary lifestyle and attitude must be able to restore the God-fearing character traits of the convicts in the prison.

“Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers (sisters), that you do unto me,” Matthew 25:38, he quoted .

Rev. Palmer-Buckle, therefore, urged eligible Ghanaian voters to vote on the day of election, adding, “Voting is both a civic and divine duty.”

Non-partisan

For his part, the Acting Director General of the GPS, Mr Emmanuel Yao Adzator, said the service ensured the safety and welfare of all persons committed to the prison and would continue to work towards the promotion of peace in the country before, during and after the election.

He encouraged the security personnel to present themselves as non-partisan at the various polling stations and refrain from actions that would tarnish the image of the service.

Mr Adzator, who commended the efforts of all security personnel,  gave the assurance that the service was ready to work with other security services to ensure peace in the upcoming election.
