‘Disburse disability fund timely’

There is need for the government to ensure the timely disbursement of the disability fund, the Asante Bekwai Municipal Director of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mr Patrick Nawah, has advocated.

He said that would help in prompt and efficient financing of persons with disability (PWDs), who are beneficiaries of the fund.

Two per cent of the quarterly disbursement of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) is earmarked as financial support for PWDs registered with the assemblies.

However, Mr Nawah said the disbursement of the disability fund had suffered delays over the years and that was not helping the department in taking good care of PWDs registered in the municipality.

He said a committee had been formed to come up with criteria for the disbursement of the funds among the various groups within the Ghana Society of Persons with Disability (GSPD).

Charity
Mr Nawah was speaking at a ceremony in Bekwai at which about 1,000 PWDs were presented with assortment of items to enable them to live comfortable lives.

The items, presented by Suzzy Charitable Centre, a non-profit organisation, comprised bags of rice, sugar, sacks of new and second-hand clothes, wheelchairs, white canes, crutches, sweets and different kinds of drinks.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the centre, Mrs Susan Wereko, who is also blind, said “it was the centre’s contribution to help fellow disabled persons improve their living conditions.”

She urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the items while calling on the public to donate to the centre in order to make it better resourced to offer help to PWDs in other parts of the country.

She further called on the government to assist the centre financially.

Appreciation
The Chairman of the GSPD in the Bekwai Municipality, Mr David Atta, received the items on behalf of the PWDs and expressed gratitude to the centre for its kindness.

To ensure transparency, he urged the government to have a representative of PWDs also as signatory to the Disability Fund covered by the DACF.
